What is preterm and low birthweight?

Around 50,000 infants in the UK each year are born preterm.

Preterm is defined as infants born at or before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Infants who are born prematurely weigh much less than term infants and fall into one of the categories below.  This is because a significant amount of the babies weight gain occurs between 36 and 40 weeks of pregnancy.

When should SMA Breast Milk Fortifier be used?

SMA Breast Milk Fortifier is used in hospitals as a nutritional supplement to the mother’s breast milk or donated breast milk for preterm babies.  It provides extra protein, energy, calcium, phosphorus and other nutrients.  Breast milk supplemented with SMA Breast Milk Fortifier is nutritionally more suitable for preterm and low birthweight infants than unsupplemented breast milk.
