SMA High Energy from birth to 18 months

High Energy Cooking

 

These high energy recipes can be given to babies and children from 6 - 18 months of age – simply purée to the desired consistency, depending on your child’s age and development. If you need more of a liquid consistency, add additional SMA High Energy before serving.

SMA High Energy contains both milk and soybean products which makes it unsuitable for feeding infants with milk and/or soybean allergies.

SMA High Energy can be used to make interesting and nutritious meals for your child and can also be used to replace milk in most recipes. Here are some great ideas to get you started ...

 

 

Extra energy cheesy sauce *

 

25 g unsalted butter/margarine
25 g cornflour or flour
250 ml SMA High Energy
50 g grated mild hard cheese

 

 

 

Method

  • Add butter or margarine to a saucepan and heat gently to melt
  • Remove from heat, add flour and slowly stir SMA High Energy
  • Replace onto a medium heat, continually whisking the mixture until it thickens
  • Add grated cheese, stirring until it’s melted
  • Serve as part of a dish - ideal for mixing with vegetables (i.e. cauliflower cheese), pasta, chicken or fish without bones
  • Check the temperature before serving

 Energy-boosting carrot and patato purée*

 


( 2 - 3 servings)
250 ml SMA High Energy
100 g patato, washed, peeled and chopped
100 g carrots, washed, pealed and chopped

 

 

 

Method

  • Place all ingedients into a saucepan and bring it to the boil
  • Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer with the lid on until the vegetables are soft
  • Purée to the required consistency and check the temperature before saving

 Extra energy cheesy chicken & broccoli *

 


( 2 - 3 servings)
50 g washed broccoli florets
50 g cooked chicken (no skin or bones)
140 ml extra energy cheesy sauce

 

 

 

Method

  • Boil or steam broccoli for approximately 10 minutes, until cooked
  • Drain away water
  • Cut cooked chicken and broccoli into small pieces to suit your child
  • Stir in high energy cheesy sauce and check temperature is lukewarm before serving

For older children, why not use this dish as the basis for a tasty pie? Simply top the cheesy chicken & broccoli with mashed potato mixed with unsalted butter and SMA High Energy.

 Energy-boosting sweet potato and rice purée*

 


( 2 - 3 servings)
25 g easy-cook, long grain rice
250 ml SMA High Energy
150 g sweet potato, washed, peeled and chopped

 

Method

  • Place rice and SMA High Energy in a saucepan and bring to the boil
  • Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes
  • Add chopped sweet potato to the pan and cover with a lid, and bring back to the boil
  • Simmer for a further 15 minutes or until everything is soft
  • Purée to a smooth consistency and check temperature before serving

 Energy-boosting chicken & vegetable casserole*

 


( 2 - 3 servings)
12 g unsalted butter/margarine
50 g leek, washed, outer layer removed, finely sliced
150 g chicken breast, no skin or bones, cut into small pieces
50 g carrot, washed, peeled and chopped
125 g potato, washed, peeled and chopped
150 g swede, washed, peeled and chopped
250 ml SMA High Energy

 

Method

  • Melt butter/margarine in a saucepan, add leek and cook over a medium heat until soft
  • Add chicken pieces and cook thoroughly
  • Add carrot, potato and swede, along with SMA High Energy
  • Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 25 - 30 minutes until the  vegetables are soft
  • Purée to the required consistency and check temperature before serving

Cheesy broccoli & pasta with extra energy*

 


( 2 - 3 servings)
50 g small pasta shapes or macaroni
50 g broccoli florets, washed
140 ml extra energy cheesy sauce (see earlier recipe) 

 

Method

  • Bring a pan of water to the boil, add pasta and broccoli
  • Cook, with the lid on, for approximately 10 minutes or until broccoli and pasta are soft
  • Drain off the water
  • Add extra energy cheesy sauce
  • Purée to the required consistency and check temperature before serving

Energy boosting banana custard*

 


( 2 - 3 servings)
250 ml SMA High Energy
60 g instant custard powder
2 medium size bananas  

 

Method

  • Heat SMA High Energy in a pan until almost boiling
  • Remove from the heat and add custard powder
  • Whisk with a fork or mini whisk until smooth and creamy
  • Mash bananas with a fork and stir into custard
  • Check temperature before serving

Tuna, mushroom & pasta in extra energy white sauce*

 


( 2 - 3 servings)
Tuna, mushroom & pasta mix
100 g pasta shapes
25 g unsalted butter/margarine
50 g mushrooms, washed and finely chopped
200 g tin of tuna in sunflower oil (check carefully for bones)

White sauce
25 g unsalted butter/margarine
25 g cornflour or flour
250 ml SMA High Energy

 

Method

  • For the Tuna, mushroom & pasta mix, cook pasta according to the instructions on the packet
  • Melt butter/margarine in a pan, add mushrooms and cook on a medium heat for 2 - 3 minutes, until soft
  • Keep warm
  • To make the white sauce, in another pan, melt butter/margarine from the white sauce ingredient list
  • Remove from heat, add flour and slowly stir in the SMA High Energy
  • Replace pan onto a medium heat, continually whisking the mixture until it thickens
  • Add tuna and cooked pasta to the sauce and heat thoroughly
  • Purée to the required consistency and check temperature before serving

Extra energy ice lollies*

 

75 g puréed fresh fruit (e.g. banana, raspberries or
strawberries - sieve to remove seeds) or pure fruit juice
(e.g. fresh orange juice)
250 ml SMA High Energy

 

Method

  • Put puréed fruit or fresh fruit juice in a bowl, along with 50 ml SMA High Energy
  • Mix into a paste
  • Add remaining 200 ml SMA High Energy and whisk
  • Pour into ice lolly moulds and leave in the freezer overnight
  • To serve, run the mould under the hot tap for 30 seconds - the ice lollies should  come out of the mould easily

 

These lollies are great treats for older children - and they’re healthy as well as high in energy.

High energy rice pudding with apricots*

 

250 ml SMA High Energy
25 g fresh apricots, washed, skinned and finely chopped
25 g flaked rice

 ( 2 - 3 servings)

Method

  • Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and stir together
  • Bring to the boil
  • Simmer for 12 - 15 minutes, until thick, stirring occasionally to stop it sticking to the pan
  • If required, purée to the required consistency and check temperature before serving
  • Instead of apricots, you could try adding whichever fruits are in season, such as peaches or plums (remember to remove stones).

Energy-packed milk shakes

 

250 ml SMA High Energy (cold)
Puréed fresh
fruit (sieved), e.g. banana strawberry, peach,
raspberry or fresh
fruit juice (e.g. fresh orange juice)

Method

  • Mix together milk and puréed fruit or fresh fruit juice
  • Serve
