SMA LF formula is nutritionally complete for up to 6 months of age, so your baby will receive all the nutrients needed for healthy growth and development – only without the lactose which may be upsetting their tummy. SMA LF is also suitable for older infants & young children, in conjunction with solid food, up to 18 months of age. SMA LF tastes the same as other SMA infant milks, so your baby shouldn’t notice a difference when you switch back to their usual infant milk e.g. SMA First Infant Milk (formerly SMA Gold).
SMA LF is suitable for both Halal and Vegetarian diets.
What is Lactose Intolerance?
Lactose intolerance (which is usually a temporary problem) is due to the absence or reduction of the digestive enzyme lactase
- Lactose intolerance is often secondary to gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and bowel) and is implicated in colic
- Less common in breastfed babies
- Causes abdominal pain, wind, loose stools and poor weight gain or weight loss
- Lasts for a few days or up to a few weeks

When should SMA LF (Lactose Free Formula) be used?
For those babies with proven lactose intolerance. It is suitable to use from birth. Please consult your Health Care Professional if you think you baby might be lactose intolerant. If your baby is weaning, you should still contact your healthcare professional and they will be able to give you advice on having a lactose free diet.
